Mangroves are special trees and shrubs that grow where rivers meet the sea. They act as green shields along coastlines, helping protect people and property from storms, waves, and erosion. These forests also trap huge amounts of carbon often more than tropical rainforests and support many fish, birds and other creatures.
Sadly, over half of the world’s mangrove areas are at risk of collapse. Major threats include rising sea levels, stronger storms, coastal development, pollution, and cutting of mangrove trees. In India, the biggest mangrove forest is the Sundarbans in West Bengal. Other vital regions include Bhitarkanika in Odisha, Pichavaram in Tamil Nadu, and coastal areas in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.
Efforts to save and restore mangroves are already showing promise. India’s MISHTI scheme (Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats & Tangible Incomes) helps plant and nurture new mangrove areas. Coastal Regulation Zone rules and community-led restoration also work well. State programs in places like Maharashtra and West Bengal bring together NGOs, locals and scientists to revive these forests.
Mangroves offer hope not only for coastal people and wildlife, but for tackling climate change. Reading more such stories inspires us all to support and celebrate nature’s heroes.
