India’s Ministry of External Affairs on July 28 clarified that claims regarding the revocation of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya’s death sentence in Yemen are inaccurate, countering statements made by the office of Sunni religious leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar. Kanthapuram’s office had asserted that a high‑level meeting in Sana’a led to a full cancellation of her execution, which had been previously postponed amid mediation efforts. The MEA, however, has yet to confirm any cancellation and deemed reports from “certain individuals” as unreliable .
Since 2018, Nimisha Priya - a Kerala nurse convicted in Yemen for murder - has been on death row, with execution scheduled for July 16, 2025, later stayed pending negotiations . Her case garnered public attention and prompted diplomatic and religious diplomacy, including efforts involving blood money under Sharia law to secure pardon. While the Grand Mufti’s intervention is credited with advancing dialogue, the MEA has emphasized that no legal or official confirmation exists yet of any sentence cancellation. Future developments will depend on ongoing talks with the victim’s family under Yemeni law.
