Cutting calories to lose weight may increase depression risk, especially in men and those who are overweight, a new study reveals. Poor nutrition from restrictive diets could negatively impact brain health.
A recent study published in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health found that individuals on calorie-restricted diets reported higher depressive symptoms compared to those not on such diets. The association was notably stronger among men and individuals with higher body mass indexes (BMIs). Researchers suggest that severe calorie restriction may deprive the brain of essential nutrients, such as glucose and healthy fats, which are crucial for maintaining mood and cognitive function.
The study challenges previous findings from controlled trials that suggested improvements in depressive symptoms with calorie restriction. This discrepancy may be due to better nutritional balance in controlled settings. Nutrient deficiencies, weight cycling, and inadequate intake of critical nutrients necessary for brain health, like proteins, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins, were suggested as contributing factors.
Experts stress the need for well-designed studies to further examine the diet-mental health connection. Additional weight-loss advice includes maintaining a balanced diet with whole foods, increasing physical activity, managing stress, and getting adequate sleep to support both physical and mental well-being.
