In a major development, 16 Naxalites, including six with a combined bounty of ₹25 lakh, surrendered in Sukma, Chhattisgarh on Monday. Among them was Rita alias Dodi Sukki, a central committee member with an ₹8 lakh reward.
The surrender took place in the presence of senior police and CRPF officials, with the cadres citing disappointment with Maoist ideology and atrocities on locals.
Nine of the surrendered Naxalites were residents of Kerlapenda village, which has now been officially declared Maoist-free. This qualifies the village for ₹1 crore worth of development under the Chhattisgarh government's new 'Niyad Nellanar' scheme, launched to rehabilitate insurgency-affected areas.
The surrender aligns with the state’s revised Naxal Surrender and Rehabilitation Policy-2025. Earlier, in April, Badesatti village received similar recognition. All surrendered cadres received ₹50,000 and will be rehabilitated accordingly. Last year alone, 792 Naxalites surrendered in Bastar, reflecting the growing impact of the state's peace initiatives.
