Your skin is under attack, doctors warn of a heatwave epidemic!

An intense heatwave has triggered a surge in skin-related ailments, prompting dermatologists to warn of worsening conditions as temperatures remain high. Over the past few days, local government hospitals have reported a consistent influx of 10–15 patients daily suffering from photodermatitis, prickly heat (miliaria), folliculitis, sweat dermatitis, fungal infections, and melasma.

Specialists like Dr. Anupam Dwivedi of CHC Soroan have observed that those spending extended periods outdoors—especially individuals with sensitive skin—are most at risk. Patients frequently present rashes, acne on the face and back, increased tanning, sunburns, and recurring infections. These are driven by UV overexposure and intensified by sweaty, polluted conditions.

Dr. Dwivedi and Dr. Anurag Tiwari of Kaurihar CHC strongly advise preventive measures, such as applying broad-spectrum sunscreen before venturing outside, avoiding peak sun hours, and observing strict personal hygiene protocols. Pollutants are believed to exacerbate skin inflammation and irritation, underscoring the need for caution.

Local patient Gitima describes her struggles: despite taking all advised precautions, she still experiences flare-ups when out in the sun. Doctors emphasise early consultation and tailored skincare routines—including cooling lotions and hydration—to alleviate symptoms and prevent complications during ongoing extreme heat.

With the heatwave showing little sign of easing, health officials continue to urge the public to prioritize sun protection, reduce outdoor exposure, and remain vigilant to treat skin conditions promptly.
