In a tragic case from Tamil Nadu’s Madurai, a 32-year-old woman named Ranjitha succumbed to injuries after allegedly setting herself on fire, accusing her father-in-law of sexual harassment. According to the police, Ranjitha had been staying with her mother in the Anaiyur area for the past four years after separating from her husband.
On Monday, she poured kerosene on herself and set herself ablaze, reportedly following repeated acts of harassment by her father-in-law. She sustained severe burn injuries and was rushed to Government Rajaji Hospital, where she later died despite medical intervention. A police investigation has been launched, and authorities are questioning her husband and father-in-law.
The incident has sparked outrage locally, with women’s rights activists demanding swift justice and the arrest of the accused. Officials said they were awaiting the autopsy report and would proceed based on evidence and witness statements.
This tragic case underscores the ongoing challenge of domestic abuse and the urgent need for stronger protective mechanisms for women in vulnerable family situations.
