A quiet revolution is unfolding across cotton belts like Vidarbha and the Deccan Plateau, where farmers are reverting to natural, eco‑centric farming. Rejecting genetically modified seeds and high‑tech methods, they now rely on cows, clay pots, and ancestral wisdom—cultivating soil health, water resilience, and market stability.
Grassroots projects backed by NGOs and government schemes are spearheading this shift. In Madhya Pradesh, for example, 6,000 farmers transitioned from chemical-intensive practices to organic cotton, enriching earth with compost and natural pest repellents. Though initial yields dropped, costs decreased and profits rose—a testament to environmental and economic viability.
Returning to native cotton varieties like Kala Cotton and desi strains enhances drought and pest resistance. Revival efforts in Gujarat, Punjab, Rajasthan, and South India tap into age-old seed-saving traditions. These crops flourish rain-fed, without irrigation or harmful chemicals, preserving both biodiversity and cultural heritage.
North India’s experimental farms demonstrate how regenerative techniques—drip fertigation, intercropping, mechanical pest control—dramatically boost productivity. Plots using advanced methods yield over 16 quintals per acre, compared to 4–6 quintals conventionally—with 60% water savings and reduced fertilizer use. India now leads global organic cotton production, responsible for over half the world’s supply.
