In a sweeping anti-narcotics operation from June 13–15, Coimbatore rural police apprehended 36 individuals linked to ganja trafficking. The operation, dubbed Operation Drug Free Kovai, deployed 89 special teams and involved around 300 officers combing the district for illicit drug activity.
Authorities seized approximately 10.15 kg of ganja and lodged 33 FIRs against the arrested suspects. Coimbatore’s Superintendent of Police, Dr. K. Karthikeyan, stated that the arrested individuals are being interrogated to trace the broader drug supply network. He emphasized that further arrests are likely based on intelligence uncovered during questioning .
The SP also urged the community to remain vigilant, especially concerning youth involvement with local dealers. He highlighted the police's commitment to dismantling the ganja peddling ecosystem and urged citizens to support vigilance efforts.
This large-scale crackdown underscores the intensified focus on narcotics control in the region. Authorities are continuing investigations to identify key suppliers and disrupt distribution. As Operation Drug Free Kovai progresses, Coimbatore police remain dedicated to keeping the district free from drug-related harm.
