The Indian government has officially reprimanded the BBC for its coverage of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed. Officials expressed strong objection to the BBC's use of the term "militants" instead of "terrorists," sending a formal protest letter to Jackie Martin, BBC's India Head.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) will now closely monitor BBC's reporting practices. Meanwhile, India has also blocked 16 Pakistani YouTube channels for spreading provocative content post-attack.
This controversy reignites tensions between the BBC and Indian authorities, reminiscent of 2023, when the BBC's documentary "India: The Modi Question" was branded as “propaganda” by the government. That incident had also led to investigations against the broadcaster.
The BBC has yet to issue a response to the latest backlash, but the Indian government's firm stance signals heightened scrutiny of foreign media narratives around sensitive national issues.
