India has surged eight spots to 77th in the Henley Passport Index 2025, marking its biggest leap yet in global rankings. This advancement enhances travel freedom—Indian passport holders now enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 59 countries, up from 57 last year.
The newly added destinations include Philippines and Sri Lanka, expanding India’s growing diplomatic ties across Southeast Asia. Visa-free access extends to nations like Malaysia, Indonesia, Maldives, and Thailand, while visa-on-arrival benefits are available in Cambodia, Jordan, and Myanmar, among others.
Despite the rise, India remains behind mobility leaders—Singapore (rank 1, access to 193 destinations), Japan, and South Korea remain far ahead. India even shares the 77th spot with Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, and Senegal, all offering entry to 59 countries.
Experts highlight that this improvement—based on reliable IATA data—reduces travel barriers for Indian tourists, businesspersons, and students, enabling spontaneous and cost-effective international travel.
India’s passport strength reflects enhanced global diplomacy, economic influence, and bilateral partnerships. The momentum emphasizes India’s ambition to facilitate greater global mobility for its citizens, although further gains depend on deepening international relations and securing more visa agreements.
