The UGC has released a list of 22 institutions operating without approval and falsely projecting themselves as universities, the regulatory body confirmed on 29 October 2025. According to the state-wise list, Delhi hosts the highest number of such institutions – 10 in total – followed by Uttar Pradesh with four. Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and West Bengal each have two, while Maharashtra and Puducherry have one each.
This move follows a recent case involving the Institute of Management and Engineering in Delhi’s Kotla Mubarakpur, which operated without UGC approval. The notice reminds students that enrolling in such unapproved institutions violates Section 22 of the UGC Act and may render their degrees invalid.
Students are urged to verify the accreditation and status of any higher-education institution via official UGC channels before enrolling. The regulator emphasises that due diligence can prevent future complications regarding recognition and employability of degrees.
