Thailand and Cambodia have signaled readiness to begin ceasefire negotiations after Trump contacted both countries’ leaders, threatening to suspend trade talks and impose tariffs of up to 36% if hostilities continued past August 1.
Cambodia swiftly embraced Trump's proposal, declaring support for an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire”. Thailand accepted in principle but demanded “sincere intention” from Cambodia and urged that the other side make the first formal move. Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai reaffirmed that bilateral dialogue—without third-party mediation—is the preferred path, and emphasized that troop withdrawal from Cambodia must be credible.
The clashes, triggered on July 24 around the contested Ta Muen temple area, have killed at least 33–34 people, mostly civilians, and displaced more than 168,000 residents on both sides of the border. Despite diplomatic overtures, clashes continued into Sunday across multiple sectors, with both sides blaming each other for shelling civilian zones and engaging in heavy artillery exchanges.
The U.N. Security Council, ASEAN, and Malaysia have urged de-escalation, while Human Rights Watch condemned alleged use of cluster munitions, calling for urgent civilian protections.
