On July 27, 2025, a devastating stampede occurred at the Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, during the holy month of Shravan. The incident resulted in the loss of six lives and left over 25 devotees injured. The tragedy unfolded as a massive crowd gathered along the temple's stairway route, leading to chaos and panic among the pilgrims.
A video capturing the harrowing moments shows a man desperately urging the crowd to move back, shouting "peeche jaao" (go back) as people scrambled to escape the suffocating crush. Some individuals attempted to climb nearby structures to avoid being trampled.
Garhwal Division Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey confirmed the fatalities and stated that a detailed report is awaited. Emergency services promptly responded, with five of the injured being transferred to AIIMS for advanced medical care.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and assured all possible support to the victims' families. The incident has raised concerns about crowd management and safety measures at religious sites, especially during peak pilgrimage seasons.
