A new trend called the Gen Z stare is causing friction in offices and customer service spaces. This viral expression, described as a long, blank, emotionless gaze, is making millennials and managers uncomfortable. But Gen Z says-it’s not rudeness, it’s a response to uncomfortable or awkward situations.
The stare, often seen in cafes or offices, has been interpreted by many as passive-aggressive or unapproachable. But some Gen Z workers say it's how they deal with customers who are rude or demanding. Experts explain it could also be a side effect of post-Covid anxiety, poor communication habits, and growing up "chronically online."
Managers, however, worry this expression signals poor social skills and is hurting teamwork and customer satisfaction. A study showed that 52% of managers say Gen Z causes workplace tensions, and 27% even avoid hiring them.
While millennials see it as disrespect, Gen Z views it as a silent boundary. As both sides clash, it reflects a bigger generational shift in how people work, communicate, and handle stress.
