This 5,000-year-old tradition is dying. Toda community is fighting back.

Members of the Toda community in the Nilgiris region of Tamil Nadu have been sensitized to the importance of preserving their unique cultural heritage. Efforts are underway to raise awareness about the significance of their traditions, including distinctive embroidery, architecture, and rituals, which are integral to their identity.

The Toda people, indigenous to the Nilgiri Hills, have a rich cultural tapestry that includes the renowned Toda embroidery, also known as "pukhoor." This intricate art form, traditionally practiced by Toda women, features red and black threadwork on white cotton fabric, often depicting motifs inspired by nature and daily life. Recognizing its cultural value, Toda embroidery was granted Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2013, ensuring its protection and promoting its significance on a broader platform.

Beyond embroidery, the Toda community is known for its unique barrel-vaulted houses and temples, as well as its deep-rooted pastoral lifestyle centered around the sacred buffalo. Their rituals and customs are closely tied to the natural environment, reflecting a harmonious relationship with the surrounding ecosystem.

However, modernization and external influences pose challenges to the preservation of these traditions. To address this, various initiatives are being implemented to educate and engage the Toda people, especially the younger generation, about the value of their cultural practices. These efforts aim to ensure that the community's heritage is not only remembered but actively maintained and celebrated.

By fostering a sense of pride and awareness, the Toda community is being empowered to safeguard its cultural legacy for future generations, ensuring that their unique identity continues to thrive amidst changing times.
