In a landmark moment for Indian streaming, Hansal Mehta’s upcoming web series Gandhi, starring Pratik Gandhi, will have its world premiere at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this September. It marks the first Indian series ever selected for TIFF’s prestigious Primetime lineup.
Based on historian Ramachandra Guha’s acclaimed books Gandhi Before India and Gandhi: The Years That Changed the World the series is produced by Applause Entertainment. With Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman handling the music score and Bhamini Oza portraying Kasturba Gandhi, the project blends global ambition with authentic storytelling.
Hansal Mehta highlighted the emotional magnitude of the premiere, calling it “an audacious dream, born of belief and perseverance, now stepping onto the world stage…a quiet revolution begins.” Composer A.R. Rahman echoed the sentiment, expressing delight over the landmark recognition.
The selection signals a pivotal shift in Indian television’s global reach ushering narratives rooted in cultural heritage onto the world’s grandest red carpets while reshaping the perception of Indian scripted content.
