Supreme Court stays release of IAF officer with role in Operation Sindoor

In a landmark move, the Supreme Court stayed the release of Wing Commander Niketa Pandey, an Indian Air Force SSC officer, who played a crucial role in Operation Sindoor and Operation Balakot.

Pandey, who joined the IAF in 2011, was due for release in June 2025 after completing 14 years of service. She sought a stay until her third and final chance for Permanent Commission.

The court criticized the uncertainty surrounding the fate of SSC officers, stating such ambiguity is harmful to the morale of the armed forces. The bench urged the Centre to consider a clear policy ensuring that SSC officers, once eligible, are guaranteed fair consideration for permanent roles.

The IAF argued she was found unsuitable twice, but the court noted her strategic contributions and called for fair and timely evaluation. Pandey becomes the first IAF SSC woman officer to get such relief.
