Dr. Kiran Sethi, a Delhi-based dermatologist, emphasizes the importance of reducing skincare steps during the summer months. "The more layers and buildup of product, the more likelihood of getting those zits," she notes. She recommends a simplified routine:
-
Morning: Cleanse, apply serum (treatment), moisturize if needed, and use sunblock.
-
Evening: Cleanse, apply serum (treatment), and moisturize.
This pared-down regimen helps prevent clogged pores and breakouts, common concerns during the humid summer season.
In addition to simplifying routines, experts advise focusing on hydration and sun protection. Using a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser enriched with ingredients like glycerin and aloe vera can effectively remove dirt without stripping the skin's natural moisture. Moisturizers containing hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and niacinamide are recommended to lock in hydration and strengthen the skin barrier.
Exfoliation should be limited to once or twice a week using mild chemical exfoliants like glycolic or lactic acid to avoid irritation. Incorporating a vitamin C serum can aid in brightening the skin and defending against free radicals.
Sunscreen remains a non-negotiable component of summer skincare. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, should be applied daily and reapplied every two hours when outdoors.
