The Punjab government has declared a public holiday on July 31, 2025, to honor the martyrdom of Shaheed Udham Singh. This day marks the anniversary of Singh's execution in 1940, following his assassination of Michael O'Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, in retaliation for the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The holiday will see the closure of all state government offices, educational institutions, and public sector undertakings across Punjab.
In addition to the state-wide observance, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has proposed renaming the Patiala-Bhawanigarh road stretch, a national highway in Singh's honor. Commemorative events, including cultural programs and tributes at various memorials, are expected throughout the state to pay homage to Singh's legacy.
This annual observance serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during India's struggle for independence and aims to inspire future generations with the values of courage and patriotism exemplified by Shaheed Udham Singh.
