Torrential monsoon rains wreaked havoc across Uttar Pradesh, leading to the death of 18 people within 24 hours, according to state officials. The worst-affected district was Chitrakoot, which reported six fatalities, followed by Mahoba, Banda, and Moradabad with three each. One death each was reported from Ghazipur, Lalitpur, and Gonda.
The victims died in rain-related incidents such as wall collapses, drowning, and lightning strikes, reflecting the intensity of the weather. Local administrations, in coordination with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), have launched relief operations and shifted vulnerable families to safer shelters.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall in central and eastern UP in the coming days. Authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.
As rainfall continues, parts of the state remain waterlogged, schools in some districts have been shut, and emergency helplines have been activated to assist citizens.
