Ahead of Bakrid 2025, the Delhi government has issued a strict advisory prohibiting illegal animal sacrifice, particularly of cows, calves, camels, and other banned animals.
The directive aims to uphold animal welfare laws and ensure public hygiene. The government expressed concern over violations during animal transportation, as many caretakers fail to comply with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Rules, 1978.
Authorities also fear a surge in illegal animal markets and unauthorized slaughterhouses. As per Rule 3 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Slaughter House) Rules, 2001, slaughtering is only allowed in licensed facilities.
Additionally, the Delhi Agricultural Cattle Preservation Act, 1994 bans cow slaughter, while camels are not recognized as food animals under the 2011 FSSAI regulations.
District magistrates, police, and commissioners have been instructed to ensure strict enforcement and take action against violators to maintain order and protect animals during the festival.
