Myths around IVF, finally explained by doctors!

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a beacon of hope for couples facing infertility—but it is not a guaranteed solution. Dr. Sunita Arora clarifies several persistent misconceptions. IVF is never 100% successful, with women under 35 achieving approximately 60–65% success per cycle. Multiple attempts can raise the cumulative success rate to 80–85% in this age group, but beyond 40, rates plummet dramatically to 5–10%.

Other myths also require correction :

  1. IVF is not just for older women or the wealthy it’s medically indicated in cases like blocked fallopian tubes, severe male infertility, or endometriosis, regardless of age or income.
  2. Male factors matter too when sperm count is extremely low or absent, surgical retrieval is used, and IVF becomes the sole path to fertilization.
  3. The treatment is generally safe, but must be thoughtfully tailored; for example, women with a history of hormone-sensitive cancer need adjusted protocols.

This balanced reality helps couples navigate their fertility journey with clarity and empathy highlighting that IVF can offer a chance, but it also demands informed expectations.
