A baby boy named Thaddeus Daniel Pierce has been born from an embryo frozen for over 30 years, making him the world’s oldest known embryo baby. The embryo was created in 1994, when his adoptive father was just a toddler. Thaddeus was born on 26 July 2025 in Ohio, USA, after the embryo was transferred into his adoptive mother Lindsey Pierce’s uterus last November.
The embryo was originally created by Linda Archerd and her then-husband through IVF, but only one was used. The rest were frozen. Years later, Linda chose to donate the remaining embryos through a Christian “embryo adoption” agency, wanting them to go to a like-minded couple. Lindsey and Tim Pierce were selected.
Of the two embryos transferred to Lindsey, one developed into Thaddeus. Now, his biological sister is 30 and has a child of her own, making Thaddeus the uncle of a 10-year-old.
Experts say such embryo births are rare but growing due to advancements in IVF and fertility preservation. The story has raised ethical, religious, and scientific discussions about embryo storage and adoption.
