External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Saturday welcomed U.S. Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor in New Delhi for high-level talks amid mounting strain in India–U.S. relations. Gor, accompanied by Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J. Rigas, is on a six-day visit to India from October 9 to 14.
During the meeting, Jaishankar posted on social media that the two discussed the India-U.S. relationship and its global implications, and he wished Gor success in his future role. While Gor will not present credentials or formally assume charge during this visit, the early engagement signals both sides’ intent to recalibrate ties.
Gor’s visit occurs at a delicate moment, with bilateral tensions over steep U.S. tariffs on Indian exports and differences on trade, visa policies, and energy also looming. The meetings are expected to include officials across external affairs, commerce, defence, and possibly broader economic portfolios.
This Delhi engagement is seen as the opening salvo for what both capitals hope will be renewed momentum in the strategic India-U.S. partnership.
