Hidden between Moldova and Ukraine, there lies a mysterious land called Transnistria - a place that technically doesn’t exist on the world map. Yet, it proudly calls itself the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR) and functions like a full-fledged country - with its own government, currency, and even military.
This unrecognised territory emerged from the chaos after the fall of the Soviet Union. In 1990, when Moldova began leaning towards Romania, the Russian-speaking locals of Transnistria feared losing their identity and declared independence. What followed was a short but bloody war in 1992, where Russian forces supported the separatists.
Today, Transnistria continues to exist as a de facto state, protected by Russian troops - but remains unrecognised by the United Nations or any major power.
Despite its political invisibility, Transnistria has become a curious travel destination, especially for adventurers who love exploring places that don’t officially exist. From Soviet-style monuments to its own currency coins made of plastic, it’s a bizarre yet fascinating glimpse into frozen history.
