Former U.S. President Donald Trump commented that he had heard reports suggesting India may have halted its Russian oil imports, calling it “a good step” if confirmed . His remarks come amid heightened U.S. pressure on countries trading with Moscow, including threats of 25% tariffs on Indian goods and potential sanctions tied to energy and defense deals .
Reuters sources report that several state refiners in India - such as Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum, and Mangalore Refinery - have temporarily paused orders for Russian crude due to narrowing discounts and rising political pressure . However, private players like Reliance Industries and Nayara Energy continue importing Russian oil under existing agreements .
India’s Ministry of External Affairs clarified there is no official policy to halt purchases, stressing that energy sourcing decisions are based on market dynamics and national interests. The MEA added it is unaware of any confirmed stop to Russian imports .
Analysts warn that if India’s pause becomes permanent, it could trigger Moscow retaliation, disrupt global oil flows, and force New Delhi to diversify to Middle Eastern or West African crude sources amid private-industry resistance to abrupt policy changes .
