Delhi, July 12, 2025 – Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta officially launched a pilot project in Shalimar Bagh on July 11 to relocate overhead power cables underground, saying, “not a single wire will be visible” across the city. The initiative, part of the 2025‑26 Delhi budget, allocates ₹100 crore toward removing existing overhead High-Tension (HT) and Low-Tension (LT) lines. As part of the model colony roll-out, the plan includes shifting 5 km of overhead lines underground with 10 km of LT and 1.2 km of HT cables installed in feeder pillar networks.
Power Minister Ashish Sood, present at the launch, affirmed the government’s commitment to reducing hazards posed by tangled overhead wires. During a similar assembly session in March, he emphasized organizing overhead wiring in “model colonies” and removing unauthorized lines to ensure uninterrupted summer power supply.
Beyond improving aesthetics, the underground cabling plans are expected to fortify Delhi’s energy infrastructure, minimize weather-related disruptions, and enhance urban safety. The pilot project's success could pave the way for broader implementation, aiming to modernize utility management across the capital.
