U.S. President Donald Trump embarks on a major five-day Asia trip covering Malaysia, Japan and South Korea amid mounting tensions with China. His primary diplomatic goal: secure a deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping that stabilises key flashpoints including trade tariffs, export controls on technology and rare-earth minerals, and China’s purchases of U.S. goods.
In Kuala Lumpur, senior officials from both countries held “very constructive” talks aimed at paving the way for the Trump-Xi meeting in South Korea next week. Trump has warned of hiking tariffs on Chinese imports up to 100% + if no agreement is reached by November 1, while China has used its rare-earth export policy as leverage.
While expectations of a comprehensive breakthrough remain modest, both sides are exploring interim steps such as tariff relief, expanded Chinese purchases of U.S. agricultural goods, and adjustments in export-control regimes. The outcome will have significant implications for global trade flows and supply-chain dynamics.
For Trump the visit is also one of optics: reviving U.S. influence in the Indo-Pacific, reaffirming alliances and showcasing deal-making credentials. With so much at stake, analysts say this week could be a pivotal moment in U.S.–China relations.
