Today in history : Delhi’s 29 October 2005 Bombings!

On 29 October 2005, the Indian capital of New Delhi was rocked by three near-simultaneous bomb blasts in the early evening at two busy markets (Sarojini Nagar and Paharganj) and a public bus in the Govindpuri area.
The attacks occurred just days before the festival of Diwali, when shoppers and commuters were out in large numbers. According to official records, 62 people were killed and at least 210 injured.
Investigators attributed the bombs to the Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar‑e‑Taiba (LeT), operating under the alias “Islamic Inquilab Mahaz” (Islamic Revolutionary Front).
The blasts prompted a swift reaction: security was tightened across Delhi and neighbouring states, numerous arrests followed, and the United Nations Security Council formally condemned the attacks as an assault on civilians.
More than a decade later, the 2005 Delhi bombings remain a stark reminder of the vulnerability of crowded urban spaces to acts of terror - and of the continuing challenge of preventing such tragedies.
