In 2014, Kolkata-based Soumita Basu was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, leading to an 80% loss of her mobility. This life-altering condition made everyday tasks, like dressing, a significant challenge. Recognizing the lack of accessible clothing options for individuals with disabilities, Soumita, alongside her mother Amita, founded Zyenika, an adaptive clothing brand aimed at restoring dignity and independence to those with mobility challenges.
Zyenika's designs incorporate features such as magnetic closures, Velcro fastenings, and easy-to-wear trousers, catering to the specific needs of individuals with arthritis, spinal injuries, or age-related stiffness. The brand emphasizes not only functionality but also style, ensuring that wearers feel confident and comfortable.
With an initial investment of just ₹21,000, Zyenika has grown to employ nine tailors, including women and people with disabilities, and has positively impacted countless lives by making fashion inclusive and accessible.
