India captain Shubman Gill reignited controversy during the third Test at Lord’s by openly criticising the Dukes ball, saying it “loses shape and hardness far too early,” which hampers bowlers during the later stages of an innings.
Earlier in the match, Gill flagged the issue with umpires and requested a ball change after only 10 overs - sparking debate when former England captain Nasser Hussain called the request “odd” and even penal consequences over alleged time-wasting surfaced.
In response, British Cricket Balls Ltd, the manufacturer of the Dukes ball, issued a statement confirming a comprehensive review of the batches used across the first three Test matches. Owner Dilip Jajodia emphasised that all production stages - from leather selection to tanning - will be examined, citing factors like weather, powerful bats, and dynamic playing conditions as possible influences .
The issue is not isolated to Gill. Vice-captain Rishabh Pant also branded the ball “irritating,” noting its inconsistent behaviour hinders bowlers and batsmen alike.
As concerns mount, the integrity of seam bowling in England remains under scrutiny. With the fourth Test in Manchester on July 23 approaching, all eyes will be on the ball - and whether manufacturer reforms are implemented in time.
