Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned on September 9, 2025, amid a wave of violent anti-corruption protests spearheaded by Generation Z demonstrators. The unrest began after the government’s abrupt ban on 26 social media platforms, perceived as censorship, triggered massive youth outrage.
Tensions boiled over when police fired on crowds, killing at least 19 protesters and injuring many more. Defying curfews, protesters targeted symbols of political power and privilege: they set fire to Oli’s private residence in Balkot, Bhaktapur, as well as homes of top politicians, including former PMs and the president’s residence.
The carnage extended to Nepal’s parliament and Supreme Court, both torched by enraged masses demanding justice and accountability. In a statement, Oli cited the “adverse situation” and a need for constitutional resolution as reasons for stepping down .
As turmoil grips the nation, the focus now shifts to forming a transitional government and responding to the deep-rooted discontent that fueled this uprising.
