The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has officially extended its closure of airspace to all Indian-registered aircraft, including civilian, military, and leased flights, until 5:19 am IST on August 24. The directive was issued via a NOTAM effective from 3:50 pm IST on Friday.
This extension continues the reciprocal ban triggered in late April, when India first shut its airspace to Pakistani carriers following the Pahalgam terrorist attack. Pakistan responded on April 24 with its own restrictions . The bans have repeatedly been renewed, underscoring ongoing diplomatic and security tensions.
Indian airlines have been rerouting many international flights - especially to Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East—via longer paths, increasing flight times and fuel use. Earlier estimates by Air India and IndiGo during similar bans suggested $600 million in extra costs for Air India alone and around an hour of added travel time per flight.
With both nations maintaining airspace closures, travelers can expect longer routes and potential fare increases until diplomatic resolution is reached.
