OpenAI has launched its first web browser, ChatGPT Atlas, signalling a major expansion beyond chatbots into the heart of how users access the internet. The new browser, built around its popular ChatGPT model, is initially available for macOS with Windows, iOS and Android versions coming soon.
Atlas offers a sidebar where users can ask ChatGPT questions about the webpage they’re visiting, receive summaries, comparisons or analysis, and even delegate tasks via an “agent mode” that can navigate sites, fill forms or shop online on the user’s behalf.
By embedding its AI into the browsing interface, OpenAI aims to challenge Google Chrome, which dominates the browser market. The move also gives OpenAI access to richer user-behaviour data, potentially boosting its ad and traffic business.
However, the entry carries risks: Chrome has billions of users, and turning browsing into an AI-driven experience raises privacy and user-agency concerns.
