Mangoes can be healthy, even for diabetics says doctors!

Long demonized in diabetic diets, mangoes are now getting a science-backed clean bill of health. Two recent clinical trials led by Dr. Anoop Misra (Fortis C-DOC) in collaboration with N-DOC and supported by ICMR find that Indian mango varieties like Safeda, Dasheri, and Langra may offer metabolic benefits when consumed judiciously.

In one study (accepted by the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition), 95 participants both diabetic and non-diabetic underwent Oral Tolerance Tests and Continuous Glucose Monitoring. The results showed that mangoes produced similar or lower glycemic responses than white bread, and in diabetic individuals led to significantly reduced glycemic variability (MAGE).

Another eight-week trial (Journal of Diabetes & Metabolic Disorders) compared a daily breakfast of 250 g mango versus white bread among 35 individuals with type 2 diabetes. Mango consumption led to meaningful reductions in fasting glucose, HbA1c, insulin resistance, body weight, waist size, and subcutaneous fat while increasing HDL ("good") cholesterol.

Dr. Misra emphasizes the importance of using mangoes as a substitute, not an addition to refined carbs, under professional supervision. These findings challenge conventional dietary rules and suggest that with portion control and medical guidance, mangoes can be a healthier carbohydrate choice for people with type 2 diabetes.
