On Friday Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the worlds highest rail bridge the Chenab Railway Bridge connecting Kashmir to the rest of India. Constructed by Afcons Infrastructure Limited the project faced immense challenges due to the Himalayas steep slopes. Accessing the site was a hurdle overcome by initially using mules and horses followed by constructing 11 km and 12 km temporary roads on the rivers north and south banks respectively. Executive Vice Chairman Krishnamurthy Subramanian called it a symbol of Indias resolve using worlds tallest crossbar cable cranes and specialized machinery. The cantilever technique enabled the arches construction culminating in a triumphant moment when both sides met in April 2021.
The bridge also required innovative solutions like consolidation grouting for a sturdy foundation and meticulous planning for the viaduct in four sections. A NABL accredited laboratory ensured quality a first for Indian Railways. Afcons managing director emphasized its role in nation building inspiring future engineers.
