Heavy Rains Force Kodagu Schools Closure

On July 17, 2025, Kodagu district in Karnataka declared a holiday for all schools, pre-university colleges, and anganwadis due to continuous heavy rainfall. The district administration, led by Deputy Commissioner Venkata Raju, made the call to protect students and staff from rising waters, slippery roads, and the risk of landslides.

The rains hit key taluks like Madikeri, Virajpet, and Somwarpet, causing flooded roads and hampering daily travel. In several low-lying areas, streams and rivers swelled, raising alarm among residents and authorities alike. An urgent advisory urged people to stay indoors and avoid venturing out.

This action follows previous closures earlier in the month, when schools were shut on June 26 and 28, also due to persistent downpours and flooding concerns. During that period, rainfall recordings were high over 60 mm in many regions prompting precautionary water release from dams.

With the monsoon still active and forecasts warning of continued showers, the local disaster management team remains on alert. Safety measures include monitoring weather updates, prepping emergency services, and warning residents near rivers and hillsides. Parents and school officials are advised to track official announcements in case more closures are needed.
