For many Indian tech professionals, the H-1B visa was once the golden ticket to the U.S. and a first step toward permanent residency. But since President Trump’s return in January 2025, even those who succeeded in the visa lottery and secured job offers are reconsidering their plans. Interviewees like Anisha, who obtained her visa in November 2024 after years of effort, now hesitates to relocate, citing escalating anti-immigrant sentiment that could lead to visa cancellations or being turned away at the airport. Another professional, Ankur, is still waiting for his company to finalize relocation despite visa approval amid growing pressure to "hire American."
Data shows just 26% of applicants secured an H-1B this year (about 1.14 lakh out of 4.42 lakh). Many who've already invested substantial sums via consultancies are now stranded, uncertain if the visa will translate to actual relocation. The uncertainty stems from emphatic political overtones: anti-H-1B rhetoric, steep new tariffs, and overt pressure on employers are reshaping the once-reliable immigrant pathway into one riddled with unpredictability and fear.
