Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked on Wednesday morning during her weekly Jan Sunwai (public hearing) held at her Civil Lines residence. A man approached her under the pretext of submitting a document and suddenly struck her - possibly slapping or pulling her hair - causing a minor head injury. Security personnel quickly overpowered and detained the suspect, identified as Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya from Rajkot, Gujarat. He is now in police custody awaiting interrogation.
Atishi of the AAP condemned the attack, stating that violence has no place in a democracy. The Congress also voiced deep concern over the incident, calling it “unfortunate.” Political leaders across parties - including Delhi BJP figures - have demanded a full investigation, with BJP suggesting possible political motivations behind the assault.
The incident exposed glaring lapses in security protocols during public interactions with high-ranking officials. A thorough review of safety measures for such events is now underway to prevent any recurrence.
