Delhi is on high alert as the Yamuna River breached the warning level, reaching 204.88 metres at the Old Railway Bridge - surpassing the 204.5 m threshold. (The danger mark is at 205.3 m, with evacuations planned if levels hit 206 m.)
Officials traced the surge to an unprecedented release from Haryana's Hathnikund barrage, averaging over 50,000 cusecs per hour, peaking around 61,000 cusecs due to heavy upstream rainfall.
In response, city authorities have issued alerts to all relevant agencies—including disaster management and civic departments - to prepare for flood-like conditions and activate emergency protocols. Evacuations may be initiated if the river continues its upward trend.
Citizens, especially those living near the river and in low-lying areas, are urged to remain vigilant, avoid the riverbanks, and follow official advisories. This early warning comes as a precaution to mitigate risks amid volatile monsoon flows in the region.
