India’s technology landscape has reached a milestone with the launch of the Vikram 3201 microprocessor by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and its Semiconductor Laboratory—a fully indigenous 32-bit chip designed for space-grade applications. Developed under the banner of the India Semiconductor Mission, it signals the country’s ambition to build a home-grown semiconductor ecosystem rather than rely on global supply chains.
However, the article emphasises this is more beginning than end: while the chip marks progress, India still meets only about 10 % of its semiconductor needs domestically, even as global demand surges. Challenges remain: high capital investment, ecosystem maturity, talent in VLSI and chip-fabrication, and aligning manufacturing scale with global standards are critical hurdles.
