North India is witnessing its most intense monsoon since 2013, registering rainfall at 21% above normal a dramatic rise reminiscent of the catastrophic Kedarnath flash floods of that year. The region has been drenched in relentless downpours, triggering widespread disruption across infrastructure and communities. In Punjab alone, rainfall has soared to a staggering 1,643% above normal in recent 24-hour stretches, submerging towns like Barnala and Mansa under floodwaters, washing away embankments, and collapsing buildings while multiple districts across Haryana and Himachal Pradesh are grappling with similarly extreme excesses.
Transport arteries are paralyzed as rivers Ravі, Beas, Satluj, and Ujh swell beyond control, prompting massive evacuation operations by the Army, BSF, and local agencies. In Jammu & Kashmir, monsoon deluge has washed away critical road links like the Tawi Bridge connector highlighting severe vulnerabilities in the face of infrastructure collapse.
As North India contends with record-breaking rainfall, the focus now shifts to resilient recovery, disaster preparedness, and protecting vulnerable communities against the unpredictable fury of a changing climate.
