Prada has come under fire after debuting sandals in its Spring/Summer 2026 Milan show that closely resemble the traditional Kolhapuri chappal—handcrafted leather sandals from Kolhapur, Maharashtra, dating back to the 12th century. While Kolhapuris typically sell for just $8–$10 in India, Prada’s luxury versions start around $750, prompting accusations of cultural appropriation without credit or compensation.
After widespread backlash on social media and from artisans—including criticism from the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce—Prada publicly acknowledged the inspiration behind the design. The brand has since entered dialogue with MACCIA (which represents around 3,000 Kolhapuri artisans) and its CSR head, Lorenzo Bertelli, to explore a “Made in India” collaboration and supply‑chain partnership.
Meanwhile, Indian artisans and local brands have seized the opportunity: Kolhapuri sales have surged, with some reporting five‑fold increases, as brands market sandals tied to the Prada spotlight. A PIL filed in Bombay High Court seeks compensation for artisans and stronger protections for GI‑tagged crafts.
