The Islamabad government of Shehbaz Sharif is poised to introduce the 27th Constitutional Amendment, a move that could significantly bolster the authority of Army Chief Asim Munir. Central to the proposal is a revision of Article 243 - current law vests supreme command of the armed forces in the President and federal government. Under the draft amendments, the military’s role in governance would be formally elevated, sparking sharp criticism from opposition parties.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif confirmed that consultations are underway to finalise the changes. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar assured that the amendment would follow parliamentary procedure. Critics argue the amendment undermines the landmark 18th Amendment, which strengthened provincial autonomy. Proponents counter that the changes are needed for better defence governance and streamlined institutional control. The coming weeks will test how Pakistan’s political institutions balance military influence, democratic norms and federal integrity.
