Amid escalating tensions over the Indus Waters Treaty, Pakistan has dispatched four urgent letters to India, urging a reconsideration of New Delhi's recent suspension of the agreement.
The treaty, signed in 1960, governs the distribution of the Indus river system's waters between the two nations. India's decision to suspend the treaty followed a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives. India attributed the attack to Pakistan-backed militants, citing ongoing cross-border terrorism as a breach of the treaty's conditions.
In response, Pakistan has expressed grave concerns over potential water shortages affecting its agriculture and hydropower sectors. The letters emphasize the treaty's significance for millions of Pakistanis and appeal for its reinstatement. India, however, maintains that sustained cross-border terrorism undermines the treaty's foundation and has called for its renegotiation.
The situation underscores the fragile nature of Indo-Pak relations and the critical importance of water-sharing agreements in maintaining regional stability.
