Pakistani authorities have arrested 11 suspects following the emergence of a disturbing video that went viral over the weekend, showing a newlywed couple shot dead in broad daylight in Balochistan’s desert by relatives and tribal elders, officials say.
The footage, circulated on social media, captures the bride clutching a Quran and calmly declaring in Brahavi: “Come, walk seven steps with me, after that you can shoot me… You are allowed only to shoot me. Nothing more than that”. Shortly afterward, she collapses after the third shot, followed by gunshots targeting her groom.
Provincial police and Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti confirmed the couple were killed for marrying without family approval. The execution was reportedly ordered by a local tribal council, and authorities claim they have identified the perpetrators. Police are now hunting nine additional suspects.
The incident has reignited national and international condemnation of so‑called “honour killings”—cultural practices that claim to defend family reputation. Human rights advocates highlight that Pakistan sees roughly 1,000 such killings annually, many targeting women—and the practice persists despite legal reforms.
