Prime Minister Narendra Modi will formally inaugurate the long-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on October 8 at 2:40 pm, according to statements from CIDCO and media reports. Having recently secured its aerodrome license from DGCA, the airport is slated to become operational by December 2025.
Developed through a public–private partnership with Adani Group holding a 74% stake and CIDCO 26%, NMIA is envisioned to relieve congestion at Mumbai’s existing airport and cater to the fast-growing demand for air travel in the region. On inauguration day, Modi is also expected to attend the opening of other key infrastructure projects during his two-day visit to Mumbai.
Once fully completed, NMIA is projected to handle 90 million passengers annually and manage up to 3.2 million metric tons of cargo. The terminal’s first phase will support about 20 million passengers, making it a major aviation hub in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Naming the airport “Loknete DB Patil Navi Mumbai International Airport” has been approved, following a proposal by Maharashtra’s government and clearance from the Prime Minister.
With the inauguration day set, the spotlight now shifts to ensuring smooth transition to full operations in December, and realizing the massive potential of this new aviation gateway.
