Leveraging Technology for Effective Disaster Management!

India faces increasing vulnerability to extreme weather events, including floods, landslides, and heatwaves, exacerbated by climate change. In 2024, the country experienced extreme weather events on 322 days, leading to significant loss of life and infrastructure damage. To address these challenges, the integration of modern technologies like Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has become crucial for effective disaster management.

Key Technological Interventions:

  • Remote Sensing (RS): Utilizes satellite imagery to monitor environmental changes, assess damage, and plan mitigation strategies.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS):

  • Analyzes spatial data to identify vulnerable areas, plan evacuation routes, and allocate resources efficiently.
  • Drones: Provide real-time aerial views of disaster-affected regions, aiding in damage assessment and search-and-rescue operations.
  • Drones: Provide real-time aerial views of disaster-affected regions, aiding in damage assessment and search-and-rescue operations.

Government Initiatives:

  • Mission Mausam: Aims to integrate next-generation radars and satellite systems with GIS-based Decision Support Systems for real-time data dissemination.
  • National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC): Provides satellite data for disaster monitoring and management.
