India has paused several planned U.S. defense purchases after President Donald Trump sharply increased tariffs on Indian exports, intensifying a trade dispute. The affected deals, worth billions, include Boeing P-8I maritime patrol aircraft, Stryker combat vehicles, and Javelin anti-tank missiles. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to Washington - intended to finalize these agreements - has been canceled.
On August 6, Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, accusing New Delhi of funding Russia’s war in Ukraine through continued imports of discounted Russian oil. This hike pushed the overall U.S. tariff rate on Indian exports to 50%, one of the highest levied on any U.S. trade partner.
While the pause does not amount to a cancellation, it marks a significant strain in bilateral defense ties. Analysts warn that prolonged tariffs could slow momentum in strategic cooperation, even as intelligence sharing and joint exercises continue. Indian officials say talks may resume once trade tensions ease, signaling an openness to negotiation despite the standoff.
