H-1B overhaul spares tourist visas, not professionals!

The Trump administration has announced a sweeping change: any new H-1B work visa application will now carry an added $100,000 fee. This move primarily affects employers who hire foreign professionals in “specialty occupations.” But many Indians are wondering: does this change affect tourists bound for the U.S.? The short answer: no.
Those travelling to the U.S. for tourism, visiting family, medical treatment, or short recreational courses must apply for a B-2 (tourist) visa. The new H-1B rules do not alter B-2 visa protocols. Tourist visa applicants will continue paying the regular non-refundable application fee (currently $185) and, in India’s case, no reciprocity (issuance) fee. The B-2 visa will remain valid for two years, with multiple entries allowed.
So, if your plan is vacation or brief visit, the H-1B overhauls do not impact your visa process. The changes hit where careers and work permits are involved — not holiday travel.
